animal in cage?

This is my homework for my course. I struggled with it, as I wasn’t quite sure that I’d understood what I was expected to make. It had to be a work with the theme ‘animal in cage’, consisting of different layers. I made several attempts.

Dit is mijn huiswerk voor Quilten Speciaal. Ik had er veel moeite mee, omdat ik niet zeker wist of ik de opdracht goed had begrepen. Het moest een werkstuk worden met het thema ‘dier in kooi’ en uit verschillende lagen bestaan. Ik heb een aantal pogingen gedaan.

For this first piece I used three sheets of plastic. On the front and back I stitched a grid of lines on one side and some organza leaves on the other. On the middle sheet I attached butterflies, made with painted lutradur, on both sides. So it’ll look similar from both the front and the back.

Voor dit eerste werkje heb ik drie lagen plastic gebruikt. Op de voor en achterkant heb ik aan de ene kant zwarte lijnen gestikt en aan de andere kant organza bladeren. Op het middelste stuk plastic heb ik aan beide kanten vlinders, geknipt uit geverfde lutradur, gestikt.

For this piece I stitched lots of thread onto water-soluble fabric, and added some circles. I made four layers like this and put them in between two matts.

Voor dit werkje heb ik wateroplosbare vlieseline volgestikt met garen en een aantal circles toegevoegd. Ik heb vier lagen gemaakt en ze tussen twee passepartoutjes bevestigd.

I also wanted to try and get the effect of  ‘animal in cage’ by making just one layer. Again I used water-soluble fabric and attached the circles and lines and some pieces of organza with lots of stitching.

Ik wilde ook proberen om het effect van ‘dier in kooi ‘te krijgen door maar één laag te maken. Weer met wateroplosbare vlieseline gewerkt en cirkels, draden en stukjes organza vastgezet tussen machinestiksel.

Then another piece, consisting of more than one layer, two layers of plastic and a piece of organza in between. I stitched lines on the plastic and on both sides I added circles. On the organza I’d printed a bee, using a thermofaxscreen.

Toen nog een werkje dat uit meerdere lagen bestaat,  drie vellen plastic en een lapje organza er tussenin. Op het plastic heb ik lijnen gestikt en aan beide zijden heb ik cirkels gestikt. Op de organza een bij geprint met een thermofaxraam.

I also made a piece using wallpaper paste. I glued several layers of fabric and pieces of organza, on which I’d printed a bird, together trying to achieve depth and making it look like a tree full of birds.

I added a second layer of a handdyed fabric behind it, which had white dots on it (because of wax resist) and I also discharged a grid of lines. It was my intention that, through the transparent first layer I could see the second layer, when holding it against the light, and that the light would shine through the dots and lines of the second layer. It does, but not very clearly, as both layers aren’t transparent enough.

Voor het volgende werk heb ik behanglijm gebruikt. Verschillende lapjes en stukjes organza, waarop ik een vogel had geprint, heb ik, elkaar overlappend, aan elkaar gelijmd. Ik wilde diepte krijgen en dat het zou lijken op een boom vol vogels.

Als tweede laag heb ik een geverfde lap gebruikt, waarop witte stippen zaten (die waren afgedekt met was) en ik heb er lijnen op gemaakt met bleekmiddel. Het was de bedoeling dat ik door de transparante eerste laag de tweede laag zou zien, als ik het tegen het licht hield. Het licht zou dan door de stippen en lijnen van de tweede laag schijnen. Dat doet het wel, maar niet zo duidelijk. De lagen zijn toch niet transparant genoeg.

This final piece I made using the water-soluble fabric again, onto which I put overlapping pieces of fabric, attached between lots of stitching.

Dit laatste werkje is weer met wateroplosbare vlieseline gemaakt. Ik heb overlappende lapjes vastgezet tussen een heleboel stiksel.

Dit is de lap tegen een witte achtergrond, ik weet nog niet helemaal zeker in welke richting ik het het mooiste vind, ik denk toch beide.

So I have been busy trying to achieve the effect that I wanted, not sure, though, if this is what the teacher meant. But I had fun and it was good practice!

Dus ik ben nogal druk bezig geweest om het effect te krijgen dat ik wilde, maar ik weet niet of dit is wat de docent bedoelde met de opdracht. Maar het was leuk en een goede oefening!

Textile Art: for lovers of fiber art

The textile website Textile Art,  that I mentioned here, and which was then newly started by Sam and Joe Pitchard, has evolved into a very interesting place to browse. Every week there’s an interview with an accomplished fiber artist,  it’s always very interesting to read and look at the work of the artist.

Sam and Joe have interviewed several people that are featured in the book ‘Textile is Alive!’ by Ellen Bakker. It’s a book filled to the brim with beautiful textile art by Dutch and Belgian artists. This week you’ll find an interview with Nicole Ladrak, who makes figurative textile art. She paints with fabric and uses lots of tulle, which has a nice effect.

There are also articles on textile books and magazines, and other textile related subjects. (Galleribba has also been featured, you can read the article here.)Sam and Joe are open to suggestions, should you have something you’d like to be featured, you can email them.

De textiel website Textile Art, waarover ik hier schreef en toen recent was opgezet door Sam en Joe Pitchard, is uitgegroeid tot een boeiende website. Elke week is er een interview met een ervaren textielkunstenaar. Ik vind het altijd erg interessant om te lezen en het werk van de kunstenaar te bekijken.

Sam en Joe hebben al een aantal mensen geïnterviewd, die werk hebben in het boek ‘Textiel Leeft!’ van Ellen Bakker. Dit boek staat boordevol prachtig werk door Nederlandse en Belgische textielkunstenaars.

Deze week kun je een interview lezen met Nicole Ladrak die figuratieve textielkunst maakt. Ze schildert met stofjes en gebruikt veel tule, wat een mooi effect geeft.

Er zijn ook artikelen te lezen over textielboeken en tijdschriften en allerlei andere textielgerelateerde onderwerpen. (Er is ook een artikeltje over Galleribba geweest, dat kun je hier lezen.) These are some more cards I made for Postmark’d Art. I usually choose two themes for each round. This time it was ‘Africa’ and ‘self-portrait’. I posted the Africa cards here.

Being a Postmark’d Art member is fun as I receive so many lovely cards from different parts of the world, and at the same time it’s a very effective way of trying out different things. I don’t always like making samples, but by making cards I can turn these samples into finished pieces.

For these cards I made a line-drawing of a photo and made a thermofax screen with it. As the cards are small I only did part of my face. I printed the face onto some handdyed fabric and filled in the lines with machine stitch, which was good for practicing some precise stitching. I must admit, after the fourth face it got a little tedious, but ‘practice makes perfect’ and it was still fun to do!

Before I had a thermofax machine I would use a lightbox and either have traced the drawing straight onto fabric  or trace the drawing on the back with a transfer pencil and then iron it onto fabric. It also worked well, but using a screen to make a print is a little quicker.

Dit zijn nog een aantal kaarten voor Postmark’d Art. Ik kies meestal twee thema’s voor elke ronde. Deze keer was het ‘Africa’ en ‘zelfportret’. Hier liet ik de Africa kaarten zien.

Het leuke van Postmark’d Art is dat ik zo veel mooie kaarten krijg uit verschillende landen en dat het een effectieve manier is om verschillende dingen te proberen. Ik heb niet altijd zo’n zin om proefjes te maken, maar het is wel leuk als ik van deze proefjes tegelijkertijd een eindwerkstukje kan maken.

Voor deze kaarten heb ik een lijntekening gemaakt van een foto en hiervan een thermofax raam gemaakt. Omdat de kaarten klein zijn heb ik maar een gedeelte van mijn gezicht gedaan. Ik heb het gezicht op handgeverfde stof geprint en daarna alle lijnen ingevuld met de naaimachine. Het was een goede manier om precies stikwerk te oefenen.

Eerlijk gezegd werd het na het vierde portret een beetje saai om iedere keer hetzelfde gezicht te stikken, maar ‘practice makes perfect’  en het was wel leuk om te doen!

Voordat ik een thermofax apparaat had gebruikte ik een lichtbak om de tekening rechtsreeks over te trekken op stof of eerst de tekening met een transfer potlood over te trekken op de achterkant en dan op stof the strijken. Dit werkte ook goed, maar een afdruk maken met een thermofaxraam werkt iets sneller.

another piece for Doezz

A while back I made a collage with bits and pieces. I glued everything down on a piece of cotton with wallpaper paste. When dry, I stitched all over it and then cut the piece into sections of 4″x6″. I attached them onto a piece of white card, so I could send them as postcards.

The theme for Doezz this month is ‘abstract’ and I thought I could use these cards to make a book. I attached the cards back to back, inserting pieces of ribbon, so the pairs are all connected an can be folded up into a book.

Een tijdje terug heb ik een collage gemaakt met allerlei restjes, die ik met behanglijm op een lap katoen heb geplakt. Toen het droog was heb ik er overheen gestikt met de machine. Daarna de lap in stukken gesneden van 10×15 cm en er een stuk stevig wit papier achter geplakt, zodat ik ze als kaarten kon versturen.

Het thema voor Doezz van deze maand is ‘abstract’ en ik bedacht dat ik de kaarten kon gebruiken om er een boekje van te maken. Ik heb ze twee aan twee met de achterkanten tegen elkaar gestikt. Een stukje lint ertussen om alles aan elkaar te zetten, zodat het opgevouwen kan worden tot een boekje.

Ik gebruik een koordje (uit mijn voorraadje machinegestikte koordjes) om het boekje te omwikkelen.

drop cloth quilt

I always work on a work surface, covered with a piece of white fabric, usually a cheap cotton. Over time this ‘drop-cloth’ gets covered in stains and marks and when it’s getting a little too full, I change it for a new one. It’s always a joy to start with a fresh looking work surface, but it never stays like that for very long!

I always keep the used ‘drop cloths’, as they tend to end up looking very interesting and I can still find some use for them.

This time the theme for Latitude was ‘leaving your mark’. I’d thought of several ways of interpreting this theme, but couldn’t decide on one. At one point I was going through my fabric stash and came across one of my drop-cloths. I cut out a section, which had a print of one of my Rembrandt thermofax screens on it, left there after I printed on organza, in which case you always get two prints for the price of one. 

I’ve been working with a ‘Rembrandt theme’ for a while now. When making my fabric Rembrandt portraits, it was so fascinating that, even though he died four hundred years ago, he still seems very much alive when studying his self-portrait so thoroughly. He sure left his mark!

Ik werk altijd op een werkblad met daar omheen een witte lap, meestal goedkope katoen. Na verloop van tijd zit deze ‘knoeilap’ vol met vlekken e.d. en zodra ik vind dat hij wel erg vol wordt, vervang ik hem door een nieuwe lap. Het is altijd zo fijn om met een brandschone lap te beginnen, maar hij blijft meestal niet zo lang schoon!

Omdat de lappen waar ik op heb gewerkt eigenlijk best mooi zijn, bewaar ik ze altijd, voor het geval ik er iets mee wil doen.

Het thema voor Latitude is deze keer ‘leaving your mark’. Ik had al verschillende dingen bedacht om aan te werken voor met dit thema, maar nog zonder resultaat. Toen ik op een gegeven moment door mijn lappen aan het rommelen was kwam ik zo’n ‘knoeilap’ tegen. Ik heb daar een stuk uitgesneden waarop een afdruk zat van een thermofaxraam dat ik van een Rembrandt portret had gemaakt op organza. Je hebt dan altijd twee prints voor de prijs van één. 

Ik ben al een tijdje bezig met het thema ‘Rembrandt’. Wat ik, toen ik met mijn Rembrandt stofjesportretten bezig was, zo fascinerend vond is dat Rembrandt al vierhonderd jaar dood is, maar nog zo ontzettend ‘levend’ leek toen ik zo’n tijdje zijn zelfportret aan het bestuderen was. Hij heeft zeker zijn sporen nagelaten!

So I thought the combination of using my drop cloth, on which I’ve left my mark and the print of one of Rembrandt’s portraits on it, would be a very good interpretation of the theme ‘leaving your mark’. So this is the result. I might have prefered the fabric as it was without the appliqued lines, but that would have been a little too easy an option for a piece for Latitude. I felt I had to make a little more of an effort!  I handquilted the portrait with golden embroidery thread.

This will be the last piece, that I’ve made for Latitude. I had to decide to leave this group and some other groups, I had too many commitments. Now I can focus more on my coursework.

Dus bedacht ik dat deze combinatie van mijn ‘knoeilap’, waarop ik mijn sporen heb nagelaten, en de afdruk van één van Rembrandt’s portretten, een heel goede interpretatie van het thema ‘leaving your mark’ kon zijn. En dit is het resultaat. Ik denk dat ik de lap zelf mooier vind zonder de geappliqueerde rode en blauwe lijnen, maar dan zou het wel een beetje een makkelijke uitwerking van het thema voor Latitude geweest zijn. Ik vond dat ik er toch wel iets meer moeite voor moest doen!  Het portret heb ik met handsteekjes en goud borduurgaren doorgestikt.

Dit is de laatste quilt die ik heb gemaakt voor Latitude. Ik heb besloten met deze groep en enkele andere te stoppen, ik had te veel verplichtingen. Nu kan ik me meer gaan concentreren op het werk voor Quilten Speciaal.

colour study

I’ve been doing some more colour studies using the ‘colour picking tool’ in Photoshop. I downloaded these four Rembrandt paintings from the collection of the Rijksmuseum and uploaded them into Photoshop. With the colour picker I tried to identify the colours. It’s funny how some colours, when clicked with the ‘colour picker tool’, turn out to be completely different than the impression I had of them at first glance. All four pieces have a rather limited colour palette, but so much variation within these colours!

Such a fun way to play and learn!

Ik ben wat meer bezig geweest met het bestuderen van kleur met behulp van de ‘kleurenkiezer’ in Photoshop. Deze vier werken van Rembrandt heb ik gedownload van de website van het Rijksmuseum en ze in Photoshop geladen. Met de ‘kleuren kiezer’ heb ik geprobeerd de kleuren te identificeren. Het is zo grappig te zien hoe sommige kleuren heel anders blijken te zijn wanneer je ze met de ‘kleurenkiezer’ aanklikt, dan je op het eerste gezicht zou denken. Alle vier werken hebben een vrij beperkt kleurenpalet, maar zoveel variatie binnen deze kleuren!

Zo’n leuke manier om te spelen en te leren!
