I have a large stack of beautiful handdyed silk scarves. You can see part of them on the photo. I dyed them using the microwave. I love that process. I put the scarve plus dye and vinegar in a plastic bag or container and pop it in the microwave for three minutes. When it comes out all or most of the dye has been used up, I just rinse and wash it  and voilà, a beautiful silk scarve. I love it! (hence the stack of scarves ) I did sell a lot or give away some as a present, but there are still plenty left.

As I like it when people have a give-away on their blog, I though I’d do one myself. I’m going to randomly pick a name from the list of my followers and people who leave a reaction and this person will receive one of these beautiful silk scarves. I’ll pick the winner in two weeks time, so anyone reading my blog can leave a comment or become a follower and have a chance to win this prize.

Ik heb vrij veel geverfde zijden sjaaltjes. Op de foto kun je een aantal zien. Voor het verven heb ik de magnetron gebruikt. Ik vind dat zo’n leuke methode. De sjaal gaat in een plastic zakje of bakje met verf en azijn gedurende drie minuten in de magnetron. Als hij eruit komt is alle of bijna alle verf opgebruikt. Even uitspoelen en wassen en voilà, een prachtige zijden sjaal. Ik vind het super! (Vandaar dus de voorraad sjaaltjes ) Ik heb er al een aantal verkocht of cadeau gegeven, maar ik heb er nog behoorlijk wat over.

Omdat ik het altijd leuk vind als mensen iets verloten onder de lezers van hun blog, ga ik hetzelfde doen. Uit mijn lijst met volgers en van degenen die een reactie achterlaten, ga ik een willekeurige naam kiezen en deze persoon ontvangt dan een van deze mooie zijden sjaals. Over twee weken kies ik een naam, dus iedereen die mijn blog in de tussentijd leest, een reactie achterlaat of een volger wordt, maakt kans de winnaar te worden.

Out of town visitors arrived yesterday and at that very moment, the electricity went out in our house.  Fortunately, we had planned to grill steak.   Crisis averted.

Artist Jo Hamilton knows how to keep things loose.  Her crocheted portraits are twisted and fun.

I came across these crocheted portraits on the Internet, aren't they wonderful! If you click on the numbers above you'll see a video of the making of one of these portraits. Deze gehaakte portretten kwam ik tegen op het Internet, zijn ze niet geweldig! Als je op de cijfertjes hierboven klikt zie je een animatiefilmpje van een van die portretten.

new gallery

This is the banner of a new online gallery. It will be filled with lots of small and affordable work by a number of artists. Sizes of the work will be up to 23×23 cm or 15×10 cm and will fit standard frames (like the Ikea Ribba frames).

Every member has a page to show their artwork. Visitors can browse the gallery and if they’re interested in buying something or they just want some information, they can email the artist for further details. So far there are six members, but I will be adding more artists to the list. It’s a work in process, but the gallery will gradually be filled with beautiful work.

Dit is de ‘banner’ van een nieuwe online galerie. Deze galerie wordt langzamerhand, door verschillende kunstenaars, gevuld met kleine, betaalbare kunstwerkjes met afmetingen tot 23×23 cm en 15×20 cm en passen in standaardlijstjes (bijvoorbeeld de Ikea Ribba lijstjes).

Elk lid heeft een eigen pagina om kunstwerkjes te laten zien. Bezoekers kunnen rondkijken en mochten ze iets zien wat ze willen kopen of ze willen meer informatie, kunnen ze de betreffende kunstenaar emailen. Tot dusverre zijn er zes leden, maar er zullen meer kunstenaars toegevoegd worden aan de lijst. Het is nog in de beginfase, maar geleidelijk zal de galerie vol staan met mooi werk.

Kijk maar eens rond op Galleribba, ik hoor graag wat je ervan vindt!

final pieces

This is what I ended up with after stitching and cutting up the large collage from the previous post, seven small pieces. I like them!

Dit is wat ik heb overgehouden, nadat ik de collage uit het vorig bericht heb bewerkt met stiksels en in stukken heb gesneden, zeven kleine werkjes. Ik vind ze mooi!

wallpaper paste collage

This is the result of my first attempt to make a collage with wallpaper paste, as described in ‘The found object’ by Cas Holmes. I used painted papers and pieces of fabric, heavy and lightweight, and layered them onto a piece of thin cotton.  In an earlier post I showed you the pots I made with this technique. I thought the paste wouldn’t make a very strong bond, but it does, the pots are very sturdy and I can even use them to store small and light objects.

Dit is het resultaat van mijn eerste poging een collage te maken met behanglijm, zoals Cas Holmes beschrijft in haar boek ‘The found object’. Op een lapje dunne katoen heb ik geverfd papier en lapjes, stevig en wat dunner,  in laagjes geplakt. In een eerder bericht liet ik de potjes zien die ik met deze techniek had gemaakt. Ik dacht dat de behanglijm niet zo sterk zou zijn, maar integendeel, de potjes zijn redelijk stevig en ik gebruik ze zelfs om er kleine en lichte voorwerpjes in te bewaren.

Trying out this technique was quite good fun, I like the result, especially the back! I think I’m going to add stitching, cut it up and make postcards from it for the next round of Postmark’d Art.

Het was leuk om deze techniek uit te proberen. Ik vind het best een leuk resultaat, vooral de achterkant is erg mooi! Ik denk dat ik stiksel toevoeg, hem in stukken ga knippen en er kaarten van ga maken voor de volgende ruilronde van Postmark’d Art.

new project

I’m working on a new project, can you guess what the subject is?

This is another ‘fiddly’ portrait. It only measures 12×12 cm. It’s only supposed to be a sample, but sometimes I like a sample enough to show it.

Ik ben bezig met een nieuw project, kun je raden wat het onderwerp is?

Dit is weer een klein ‘priegel’ portretje. Het is maar 12×12 cm. Het is bedoeld als proefje, maar soms vind ik die best de moeite waard om te laten zien.

Now I used different fabrics for the beagle, it’s also a lot smaller, 11×11 cm. See how the result can be different? Because of the darkest fabric, there’s more contrast. Also the diagonal quilting, I think, is fun. I like this one better! It’s a present for a friend, I hope she’ll like it, but actually, I think she will, as it’s her dog!

Nu heb ik andere stofjes gebruikt voor de beagle, het is ook een stuk kleiner, 11×11 cm. Zie je hoe het resultaat heel anders kan zijn? Door het donkerste stofje is er meer contrast. Ook de diagonale quiltlijnen zijn grappig. Ik vind deze mooier! Het is een cadeautje voor een vriendin, ik hoop dat ze het mooi vindt, maar dat zal eigenlijk wel, want het is haar hond!

another beagle portrait

As my latest beagle quilt had got lost in the post, I tried to make another one. Not of the same beagle. I’m also going to make one similar to the one that got lost, some time.

As beagles have good contrasting colours they’re easy to put into fabric. My stash of commercial fabrics isn’t very large anymore, so it was a challenge to find the right fabrics. It’s the fabrics that make or break a portrait. I’m fairly happy with these colours, but next time I’ll make it more colourful.

Omdat een van mijn beaglequilts kwijtgeraakt was in de post, heb ik een andere gemaakt. Niet van dezelfde beagle. Ik ga ook nog een keer dezelfde soort quilt maken, als die kwijt was geraakt.

Beagles hebben mooi contrasterende kleuren, daardoor is het makkelijk om ze ‘in stofjes te zetten’. Mijn voorraadje gekochte lapjes is niet meer zo groot, dus was het moeilijk om de goede uit te kiezen. Het zijn juist de stofjes die een portret goed of minder goed maken. Ik vind deze kleuren redelijk, maar volgende keer ga ik een meer kleurig beagleportret maken.

great workshop

Dit wordt een geweldige workshop. Leren van de besten! Els geeft ook een tweedaagse workshop op 2 en 3 juni in haar atelier in Zeeland.

some small pieces

These are two small pieces I made. I have a beautiful piece of handdyed fabric and instead of using it for a large piece I’m ‘fussy cutting’ the best parts for this small work. I love my usual handstitching, even though it’s very simple. The effect of it is great! You can see that, by using a slightly different colour of thread for the two pieces, the background seems to be a different colour.

Dit zijn twee kleine werkjes die ik heb gemaakt. Ik heb een mooie lap geverfde stof en in plaats van één groot werkstuk te maken knip ik de mooiste stukjes eruit voor deze kleine quiltjes. Ik gebruik graag mijn bekende kleine steekjes, ook al is het vrij simpel. Het effect is leuk! Doordat ik voor beide werkjes een iets andere kleur garen heb gebruikt, lijkt de achtergrondkleur te verschillen.
